Daniel, an office worker, spends a lot of time dreaming about winning the lottery. What could he do with the money? So many things. Everything, in fact, that he has ever believed will make him happy.
Through his office window he sees Su, sitting under a shady tree in the park. He has seen her there many times before. Daniel is intrigued about why she always looks so happy and contented even though she does not seem to be doing anything. He decides to go and ask her.
What he had seen from his office window was Su’s daily meditation, which she finds can raise her mind from daily stress anticipation and concern, and return it to a happier more contented outlook.
Su also works hard, she runs her own business. She explains, as she spends more time with Daniel, how she has learned, over time, new ways to approach day to day life, which have resulted in her being more content and happy.
Daniel learns from Su about meditation, about living in the present moment, and he begins to change his views about what he thought would make him happy. He learns about enjoying the journey towards his goals and about being aware when his mind gets carried away in unhelpful directions. And, he learns about setting goals not just for material advancement, but goals which can actually help him become happier and more fulfilled.
Daniel starts to realise that the happiness and contentment he seeks is within his grasp, and that if he can put into action Su’s wise words he may already have everything he needs to be happy and fulfilled. He may not need to win the lottery after all to be happy. In fact he may have already won the lottery, just not the one he always dreamed about.
This is a very short book, designed to be read in under an hour. It presents in a happy, interesting, easy to read story, some timeless learnings about dealing with the tricky business of finding contentment in modern day life.

I just read this book and loved it. It's a quick read and each morsel is packed with wisdom. I am going to put what I learned from Winning the Lottery of Life into action immediately, in particular I'm simplifying my life with less possessions and less 'needs'. Being in the present moment is also something I need to work on. Reading this book takes just one hour, but it is an hour that will change your life. I am so glad Neil James took the time to condense the teachings into an easy to read very short book like this, making it accessible to all.
