When searching for true love, Michal and Danna face immense obstacles and stir up a lot of trouble. This tale of passion from a little known segment of European history involves spy-like plotting, wars, and personal ambition. The beliefs of the protagonists conflict with the existing laws, and all this leads to a gripping adventure that crosses borders and continents. Yet this is a poetic and often funny story. Michal and Danna are in love and, for them, life is beautiful even when the world is collapsing around them. Their life journey is presented in four parts which differ in pace and mood like in a symphony. Could they remain separated, forever? Will they go to prison? Will the children who lost their fathers eventually find them? Start this book, and you won’t stop until you reach the end.

Jiri Soukup's novel is a multi-dimensional Symphony, with movements from Allegro Appassionato, to Scherzo, Andante Cantabile to Presto. This is a story of a great romance. It begins in May 1968 when Michal and Danna meet and on the same day, Michal begins the application process for a Fellowship with the National Research Council in Ottawa Canada. Then comes the Soviet invasion in August. In October the two are selected by their office for a work visit to examine a new computer in Katowice Poland.
Michal and Danna are good friends and colleagues, and their friendship deepens as they work and travel together. Both were already married with small children, but neither of them is aware of the marital problems the other one has. One day, they accidentally dance on an engineering convention, and the next day he tells her that he would like to marry her. In the end, true love wins all and succeeds in "Moving Mountains."
The second dimension of the story is one of escape from Czechoslovakia to Canada. The story is immensely complex, involving a first visit to Canada on a Fellowship for Michal, a premature return before the fellowship ran out, escape for Danna and her daughter, and then escape for Michal. The escape story is as gripping and exciting as the film "ARGO". Indeed, the book could easily be transformed into a movie. Its structure with 164 brief chapters already seems to be in the form of screen-play!
There are a number of sub-themes in the escape that stand out. There are acts of kindness and generosity from strangers and acquaintances that make the escape possible. There are numerous coincidences mostly negative, but some positive, that make the escape unpredictable and most difficult. Then there is continuous courage, persistence and good judgment that enable Michal to overcome heavy odds and strokes of bad luck and finally make his way to Canada.
The third aspect of the book is the portrayal of Czechoslovakia at the time of the Russian invasion. While the citizens are portrayed as human, comprehensible and usually likeable, the system that tries to prevent its people from exercising the right to freedom of movement - recognized in the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights and signed by the Czech regime - is abominable.
Finally, the depiction of Ottawa is particularly interesting to me - a citizen of that city. Michal's journey by canoe from Mooney's Bay, avoiding the Hog's Back Falls and then down the Rideau Canal to the Chateau Laurier just by Parliament Hill, a few days after arriving in Ottawa is especially touching.
All in all this a great story that keeps the tension and suspense going up till the end: "Will he make it?" Will Michal and Danna meet finally meet in Ottawa?
Once one has started reading the book, it is hard to put down.
A fine book!

On Moving Mountains edition by Jiri Soukup Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Full disclaimer I am a friend of the author. My opinion you should read the book regardless. The book is about a man and his wife who have to overcome bureaucracy, broken prior marriages and the Iron Curtain to build a new life together in Canada. Their struggles are well documented in this novel, which is part love story, part adventure. It is gripping and - especially if you like classical music - engrossing to read. For those who have never read about or experienced life in communist Prague around the time Moscow sent tanks into the streets, the book is highly educational as well. Wholeheartedly recommended!
I found "On Moving Mountains" to be one of the most enjoyable books I have read in many years. Not only is the story of the escape fascinating in its own rite but more importantly is the message of the indomitable strength of the human spirit, the love of two people that can transcend incredible human hardship and the victory of the human spirit over all odds.
I have recommended this book to a number of my friends and I do so as well to readers of this review.

This story, set in the turbulent days of Iron Curtain Eastern Europe, truly brings to life the 'look over your shoulder fear" of the Totalitarian regimes in power. The novel is truly an exciting read about two lovers seeking to attain a happy, safe and beautiful life together. I especially enjoyed the pacing of the book as related to a classical musical piece. A really great read and the novel has all the elements for an exciting screenplay. Highly recommended!
Those of us who have grown up in North America don't appreciate what we have; we take for granted that freedom is our right, not a privilege. This book should be made a compulsory reading for every young person (and most adults). I did not skip a single page of this book. Every chapter defines an integral part to the roles of the characters and the eventual consequences of their actions.
Reading this book was like swimming through molasses. The book is apparently based on a true story but the writing made the characters and the events like cardboard cut-outs. The book was emotionally flat.
The book has a realistic and fulfilling love story. The author points out similar interests of Michal and Danna such as same profession, love of family, dancing and desire for life in Canada. I felt that it was intriguing and mentally challenging to follow Michael's escape from the communist country. It was exiting for me to learn of Michal's adventures in several countries including Canada. Even for me, as a Canadian, it was a memorable historical moment when in 1968 the Soviet tanks invaded Prague.
The author portrays the living conditions under the Communist rule such as no freedom of speech, the bureaucracy, and the hardship and powerty of the Czech people. It impressed me how the Czech people chose peace and avoided bloodshed when facing an overwhelmingly stronger superpower.
I feel as if the characters were my good friends. The story is complex but easy to read, and I highly recommend it.
A fascinating book. It brings to life that dreary existence that millions in Europe were force to endure for half a century. Characters so well drawn, the entire story weaves the reader into the story, so you can almost taste, smell and feel the events unfolding. Many life lessons there.
